Nearly one and a half months since the NBA front offices and players have been busy with free agency, talent hunt and contract signings. But thick mist still surrounds Cam Thomas.

Once a promising scorer with a 24 PPG average (2024-25 season), the former Brooklyn Nets star remains unsigned even 11 days deep in August. And the issue probably isn’t his scoring.

“There’s a lot more to the NBA and sticking around than just (scoring),” said Nets forward Michael Porter Jr. on the Road Trippin’ Show around early May, 2026. “For Cam, I think it was a mixture of he was frustrated with a lot of things, and also his personality."

Thomas, who has shown dominant offensive surges from time to time, signed a qualifying offer with the Nets in September 2025. The team reportedly tried to offer a multiyear extension, but both parties were unable to decide on a satisfactory number.

Fast forward to February 2026, the Nets waived him, allowing the Milwaukee Bucks to shoot their shot at him. Thomas showed what an offensive powerhouse he could be early on, racking up 34 points in one of the earliest games with the Bucks.

But that didn’t stop the Bucks from waiving him in March. Ever since, Thomas remained an unrestricted free agent waiting for a fairytale deal that might be tough to land.

Porter has already highlighted the personality part. And he’d be right. Look at those who make it big in the NBA, and almost all of them are two-way players who can impact the team even when they aren’t scoring. In Thomas’ case, things are somewhat limited.

“He doesn’t really socialize. He’ll come to the gym sometimes, and he’ll say like two words all day, all practice…” Porter added to the same interview. “I don’t think he does it in a way where he’s trying to be a bad teammate; I just think that’s him.”

A player can have a distinct personality. But when it's about playing a team sport for a franchise that pays you, the dynamics shift, per Porter.

“When it comes to a team being willing to pay you and come off that money, and you’re a number one option, it comes with so much more,” he added. “I don’t know if he was willing to break out of his personality and be talkative and try to be a leader and bring guys together.”

Moving forward, all eyes will be on what awaits Thomas before teams gear up to take the courts in October 2026.
