Why Is Trae Young Hated in New York? Explaining Wizards Star’s History With the Knicks

Victor Wembanyama has become the latest public enemy of the New York Knicks fans. After the Game 3 loss, the Knicks fans were seen ripping Wemby's jersey outside Madison Square Garden.

But when Wembanyama was asked about the hate he was receiving, he brought up New York's public enemy number 1. "I'm nowhere near Trae Young level, though," he told reporters during the post-game presser.

So, how did Trae Young earn the title of New York's ultimate antagonist, and why does the rivalry take on a bizarre twist today?

It all started with Bill de Blasio, the 110th Mayor of New York City. Before the first game of the first-round series of the 2021 NBA Playoffs between the Knicks and the Atlanta Hawks, de Blasio publicly called out Young for 'hunting for fouls.'

Young opened the series with a 32-point performance along with 10 assists at Madison Square Garden. At one point during the game, Young hit a go-ahead basket and silenced the crowd, making the gesture by putting a finger on his mouth.

With the Knicks on the verge of elimination in Game 5, Young hit a half-court shot and took a bow in front of the New York crowd. He finished that series averaging 29.2 points per game. That was the day Trae Young became New York's enemy No. 1.

In the next season's first Hawks-Knicks matchup, Young didn't play. He made his return in their next contest. Young again became a nightmare for the Knicks, putting up 45 points in the win at MSG with thousands of New York fans chanting "f*** Trae Young."

Trae Young Issues Fresh Warning to NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani

Young issued a new warning to the New York Knicks fans after his name was brought up by the new mayor of New York City.

During the first round of the playoffs, current New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani was asked about the expensive ticket prices for the Knicks' postseason games. The mayor put the blame on the Wizards' star.

"I would say that I blame Trae Young,” he told reporters. “And I think it's always important to blame Trae Young.”

In response, Young later warned on social media of starting another nightmare for the Knicks. But this time, he might be in the Wizards' jersey.

“Remember what happened the last time the Mayor of that City had my name in his mouth during a time like this…. #DontBlameMeWhenItHappensAgain,” he wrote.

Do you think that Trae Young is still New York's public enemy number 1, or has he been replaced by Wembanyama? Let us know in the comments.
