Many analysts have cited various reasons why LeBron James remains one of the top players, even at the twilight of his career. But former NBA Champion Kendrick Perkins offered a more personal perspective after the veteran’s latest playoff showing.

The praise followed James’ play against the Houston Rockets, where the 41-year-old forward delivered a team-leading 28 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists to push the Lakers to a 2-0 lead. In the absence of Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, LeBron has emerged as the clear offensive initiator on the team.  

Appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, Perkins explained his reasoning with a mix of humor. He said, “Look, Bron and I battled at AAU, played on the same team with the Oakland Soldiers. McDonald's All-American together, drafted together. He is still going, and I'm in the next chapter of my f****** life,” leaving everyone in the panel burst into laughter. 

The analyst further raised the question of the hour, “Doing it at the highest level. Can you explain to me how a 41-year-old, in his 23rd year in the NBA, is still looking like a top-five player in the NBA? That's what he looked like last night.”

Perkins further backed his claim by pointing to James’ late-game impact, which included a windmill dunk off Marcus Smart’s pass. Speaking of that dunk, Perkins said, “He didn't have to show off like that. But he did that for the neighborhood.”

On an individual level, LeBron James has left everyone inspired. But on the collective front, the Lakers still have a lot to figure out. 

How Long Can LeBron James Carry the Lakers This Postseason? 

While LeBron James has stepped up his individual performances in the absence of Doncic and Reaves, the Lakers' postseason remains tied to the health of their star cast. Recent updates from HC JJ Redick and insider Shams Charania indicate that Luka Doncic remains sidelined indefinitely with no confirmed return timeline.

However, another report from Dave McMenamin revealed an update. He reported that Doncic has begun light shooting sessions under supervision, signaling gradual progress. Meanwhile, Austin Reaves has resumed controlled one-on-one court work. These updates suggested that both starters are moving toward eventual return.

Until the reinforcements arrive, the responsibility for maintaining momentum remains heavily on James. With the series shifting to Toyota Center on April 24th, the Lakers face a crucial stretch that could define their postseason trajectory.
